Maldives Customs Service has intercepted 2.4 kilograms of narcotics intended for smuggling into the country by air.
The seizure took place following additional searches of two Maldivian nationals arriving from Thailand on December 26.
The passengers, aged 41 and 21, were found to be carrying the drugs concealed within their bodies. Initial tests conducted by customs officials confirmed the presence of heroin and mephedrone in the substances recovered.
The seized narcotics, including their packaging, weigh a total of 2.4 kilograms. Authorities estimate the street value of the consignment to be approximately MVR 5.5 million.
Maldives Customs Service has handed over the confiscated drugs and the two individuals involved to the Maldives Police Service for further investigation.
