Male' City Council has approved a budget of MVR 487.2 million (approximately USD 31.6 million) for 2025, despite facing reduced state funding allocations. The budget was ratified during the council's 178th general session of its fourth term.
The council faces a MVR 23 million reduction in state funding compared to 2024, even as the national budget has seen significant increases, according to Councilor Mohamed Saif Fathih. He noted that the council consistently receives less than its legally mandated allocation from the state budget.
Deputy Mayor Ahmed Nareesh highlighted potential new revenue streams, particularly through the council's unique vessel fleet. The council plans to expand its maritime assets, as private companies and individuals have expressed interest in leasing these specialised vessels that are uncommon in the Male' area.
The approved budget outlines both projected revenue and expenditure for the fiscal year 2025, with the exact figure standing at MVR 487,225,846.50.
