The Maldives Police Service has issued a warning via their official X account about individuals exploiting helmet regulations to commit crimes across the country.
Authorities have observed a concerning trend where people are wearing motorcycle helmets in areas where they are not legally required, using them to conceal their identities whilst entering businesses and service establishments.
According to Article 19 of Regulation No. 2021/R-131, helmet use is only mandatory for both riders and passengers of Category A1 and A0 vehicles in zones where the speed limit exceeds 30 kilometres per hour. These areas are clearly marked with appropriate signage.
"We will be stopping and searching suspicious individuals who wear helmets whilst operating land vehicles in non-mandatory zones," the police statement read. "This measure has been implemented to ensure public safety and maintain a secure environment for all citizens."
The statement highlights growing concerns about the misuse of legitimate safety equipment for criminal activities. Police have emphasised that this enhanced surveillance is part of their broader efforts to preserve public security across the Maldives.
