The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has recommended that the Committee on Independent Institutions review the appointment of Ahmed Nashid as its Vice President.

Last month, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu submitted Nashid’s nomination to Parliament for approval.

The recommendation comes after legislative changes last year altered the process for appointing ACC leadership. Under the amended Anti-Corruption Commission Act, the President and Vice President of the commission are now appointed by the President of the Maldives, subject to parliamentary approval. Previously, these positions were determined through an internal vote among commission members.

Ahmed Nashid, who has been serving as a member of the ACC since January 26, was nominated for the Vice President role by President Dr Muizzu. His appointment is now under review by the Committee on Independent Institutions, which is responsible for evaluating nominations before they are presented for final parliamentary approval.

The ACC, established under the 2008 Constitution, is an independent institution mandated to investigate corruption cases and refer matters requiring prosecution to the Prosecutor General’s Office. The commission also conducts research and provides recommendations to Government authorities on measures to prevent corruption.
