Neykurendhoo harbour project reaches 71% complete

The HDh. Neykurendhoo Harbour Development Project is progressing steadily, with 71 per cent of the work now completed.

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which is overseeing the project, confirmed that dredging operations for the new harbour basin have been successfully completed, while construction of the quay wall structure is well underway. Concrete works on the quay wall are currently in progress.

The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, officially handed over the project to MTCC on October 31, 2022.

Valued at MVR 451.1 million, the initiative aims to enhance maritime infrastructure in the region, improving access for vessels and supporting economic activity.

As part of the project, the following developments are being carried out:

  • Installation of a mooring buoy
  • Installation of navigation lamps and port lights
  • Construction of a 366-metre outer wall
  • Construction of a 212-metre quay wall
  • Revetment works covering a 166-metre area
  • Construction of a 10-metre-long, 9-metre-wide concrete ramp
  • Land reclamation  of over 1,985 cubic metres
  • Harbour pavement construction over 1,859 square metres
  • Embankment excavation over 22,323 cubic metres
  • Excavation of the old embankment in a 6,806-cubic-metre area

Once completed, the Neykurendhoo Harbour is expected to significantly improve transportation links, facilitate trade, and provide better access for local fishermen and businesses.
