A prominent figure in the Maldivian music scene, renowned musician and singer Mohamed Majid (Mezzo Mode), has passed away.
According to information received by MMTV, Mezzo reportedly passed away whilst receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), where he was reportedly being treated following a heart attack.
Known primarily as the frontman of Mezzo Band since his debut with Club Cobras in 1977, Mezzo was an influential artist in the Maldivian music industry. He distinguished himself by creating original Maldivian compositions during an era when indigenous melodies were rarely produced.
His hit songs including Kamana Gothee Aadhanuthaa, Jismu, and Maaliaraaney Maaliaraaney played a crucial role in popularising local music among Maldivian youth. Songs like Visnaa Visnaa, Udun Tharithah, and Dhaaneyhe Thihan'dhaan Filaa joined the list of popular songs later.
The Mezzo Band gained international recognition, representing the Maldives at prestigious events including the ITB Berlin Tourism Fair and BIT Milan Tourism Fair. They performed across South Africa, Seychelles, Doha, and Bombay, and their music video for Visnaa Visnaa was also the first Maldivian song to be shown internationally on MTV music channel.
For his contributions to music, the Maldivian government honoured him with the National Award of Recognition in 2010 in the Performing Arts category, acknowledging his excellence in singing and musical performance. This recognition came after 33 years of service to the industry.
A multi-talented artist, Mezzo was not only a composer but also an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. His discography includes four albums – Guguri, Maali, Tenth, and Listen – featuring 40 original compositions. The songs from Guguri and Maali became particularly popular at school events and private functions. Until recently, he maintained an active performance schedule, regularly appearing at Maldivian resorts.
