Police have taken into custody a suspect linked to dangerous criminal activities upon his arrival in the Maldives.

The Maldives Police Service reported that they have apprehended a suspect at Velana International Airport who is believed to be involved in recent violent assaults and other serious criminal activities.

The suspect, identified as a 31-year-old Maldivian male, Hussain Areesh, was arrested today following his attempted escape to Malaysia. According to police, the suspect had attempted to enter Malaysia whilst under a court-issued arrest warrant. Malaysian authorities denied him entry, and he was subsequently returned to the Maldives on a different flight.

Sources indicate that the suspect was wanted in connection with a violent assault that occurred on the 4th of this month near Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), where he allegedly attacked an individual with a dangerous weapon before fleeing the scene.

The police are continuing their investigation into the matter.
