A nationwide clean-up initiative titled Roadha Saafu has been announced in preparation for the upcoming Ramadan month.
The campaign, jointly organised by the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works and the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, is scheduled for this Saturday.
Speaking to local media, Ahmed Mausoom, Director General of the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, confirmed that the clean-up effort will encompass both the Greater Malé region and the atolls, with participation from various government institutions, companies, and offices. He highlighted that the initiative would focus on clearing heavily littered areas across different islands.
Mausoom explained that in Malé, the operation will be divided into five zones with participation from 40 institutions. These zones include the Usfasgan’du area, Industrial Zone, Artificial Beach area, and Customs area. Additionally, the police will assist in removing long-abandoned vehicles from the streets.
Aathika Ibrahim, Director General of the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, announced that the clean-up activities will run from 6:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. She noted that Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) will conduct a separate clean-up operation at Velana International Airport, whilst Housing Development Corporation (HDC) will organise a clean-up event in Hulhumalé on the 22nd of this month.
Several civil society organisations have also initiated their own clean-up campaigns for Ramadan. Eagles Community and Manfa Association are preparing to clean the Eagles area (West Park) this Saturday, beginning with breakfast at 8:00 a.m. The organisers will also set up collection points for old Qur’an copies, with disposal assistance from the Malé City Council and WAMCO.
