According to the Minister of Social and Family Development, Aishath Shiham, 67 children have already been placed with families, and the process of placing more children is ongoing.

Additionally, 35 new applications have been submitted by individuals seeking to foster children currently in shelter homes.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, the Minister spoke of the Government’s commitment to ensuring that every child in state care is placed within a family environment. This initiative aligns with a pledge made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

While some children have been reunited with their biological families, others have been placed with relatives or foster families through structured arrangements.

The Minister noted that families entrusted with the children are providing care that prioritises their well-being. Each placement is carefully assessed to ensure it is in the best interest of the child. The process of reviewing additional applications is progressing, with authorities evaluating the suitability of potential caregivers.

There is optimism that all 139 children currently in state custody will eventually be placed with families. The Minister highlighted the encouraging response from individuals willing to foster and care for these children, reflecting a strong community commitment to child welfare.

Alongside these efforts, the Ministry has observed a decline in the number of children entering state care. Over the past year, there has been a 23 per cent reduction in the number of children taken into custody.

The Minister attributed this decline to improved child care practices within families. When data from 2022 and 2024 are contrasted it indicates a 19 per cent decrease in the number of children living in state-run centres and a 23 per cent reduction in child removals from homes.

In addition to family placements, the Ministry is focused on preparing older children for independent living. Currently, 24 children in shelter homes are completing their secondary education and preparing to transition into society. Efforts are underway to equip them with the skills needed to build a stable and self-sufficient future.
