Ali Mushfiq Mohamed Shareef, 25, from Laamu Maavah, is missing after the fire that broke out on the "Holhudhoo Boat" on April 2, 2025.
Mushfiq was returning to Malé after spending the last days of Ramadan and Eid with his family. He boarded the vessel with his younger brother, Mimshawi, on Wednesday morning. Their mother and sisters accompanied them to the harbour to see them off. Just before departure, Mushfiq briefly stepped off the boat to comfort his crying younger sister and say farewell to his parents.
"My youngest child loves Mushfiq dearly. She was crying because he was leaving," Mushfiq's father Mohamed Shareef told MMTV. "She took this photo of her brothers. I pray it won't be the last image of my eldest son."

Mushfiq was widely respected in his community as a gifted Quran reciter. He had won numerous competitions, including first place twice in the Laamu Atoll Quran competition and second place nationally. He frequently served as imam at his island's mosques and led late-night prayers during Ramadan.
His greatest aspiration was to memorise the entire Quran, having already completed six parts. While working, he was pursuing an Architecture degree, after previously earning a diploma in Quranic Studies.
"He never spoke harshly to anyone," his father shared. "Even when displeased, he wouldn't complain. He was truly a young man of excellent character."
From his earliest years, Mushfiq was recognised as a model young man in Maavah. His most distinctive qualities were his respect for others and his devoted attention to religious matters. He was also academically accomplished, ranking in the top nine in his O’Level examinations.
The disappearance of Mushfiq in the boat fire has caused profound grief in his community. As videos of his beautiful Quran recitations circulate online, the nation remains united in prayer for his safe return.
