Following his recent trip to Liverpool, United Kingdom, Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu confirmed that the Maldives will receive technical support from Liverpool FC.

Speaking to state media, Minister Rafiu explained that the partnership would significantly benefit football development in the Maldives, with both parties agreeing on key initiatives. He outlined that Liverpool’s involvement would enhance the sport in the country.

During discussions with representatives from Liverpool International Academy, the club presented a detailed plan, including insights from senior Academy officials. The hour-long meeting focused on potential collaborative projects, with the establishment of a Liverpool academy in the Maldives as a key topic.

Minister Rafiu highlighted that similar projects are already underway in other countries and expressed optimism about bringing Liverpool coaches to the Maldives. The talks also covered the logistics of opening the academy, including facility requirements and the selection of local coaches. The Minister noted that current Maldivian coaches would play a key role, with Liverpool handling the educational elements of the programme, including the stationing of a dedicated coach in the Maldives.

Minister Rafiu described the trip as the first step in formalising the agreement, with further details expected from Liverpool soon.
