On the occasion of World Health Day, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu called on the people of the Maldives to prioritise their physical and mental wellbeing by embracing healthier lifestyles and refraining from harmful practices.
In a message shared on social media, the President reiterated the Government’s firm commitment to working in partnership with all relevant stakeholders to enhance the national healthcare system. He affirmed that the Government remained resolute in its efforts to build a society where every citizen is afforded a healthy beginning, thereby laying the groundwork for a more resilient and sustainable future.
President Dr Muizzu encouraged the public to adopt balanced diets, engage in regular physical activity, and give due attention to their mental health. He also advised the population to avoid behaviours and substances detrimental to overall wellbeing.
As part of its public health agenda, the Government is actively working to strengthen the country’s healthcare infrastructure, with a particular emphasis on preventative care. A primary healthcare system is being established throughout the atolls, aimed at the early identification and management of diseases. These efforts are further supported by health awareness programmes designed to foster early detection and informed health practices within communities.
Concurrently, the Government has implemented a range of initiatives to improve the quality of medical care and expand healthcare services nationwide. Tertiary-level services have been upgraded at both Dharumavantha Hospital and Hulhumalé Hospital, with additional beds being installed. Expansion works are also in progress at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), which is scheduled to receive further bed capacity. The Government also announced its intention to add a total of 117 hospital beds within the Malé region, thereby enhancing the health system’s capacity to accommodate the growing needs of the population.
