Legal representatives of First Lady Sajidha Mohamed have clarified that the ongoing legal proceedings involving political activist Mariyam Zubair are purely civil in nature, aimed at protecting the dignity and wellbeing of a child, and are not related to any criminal investigation.

The clarification was issued on April 20, 2025 through a formal press release from Rehendhi Chambers LLP, the law firm representing the First Lady, in response to widespread misinformation linking the cases to actions taken by the Maldives Police Service or the Criminal Court.

The First Lady’s legal team confirmed that the cases were filed at the Civil Court and the Family Court under constitutional provisions and the Child Rights Protection Act (Act No. 2019/19). These cases, the statement noted, were initiated to address concerns that political rhetoric during recent demonstrations had infringed upon the dignity and rights of the President’s son.

“There are no criminal charges being pursued, nor do these cases involve police investigations,” the press release stated, dismissing suggestions to the contrary as misleading and harmful to the legal process.

The statement emphasised that the legal actions were undertaken to prevent children from being used as subjects in political discourse, reinforcing the importance of upholding their rights and privacy.

The firm urged individuals and the media to verify facts before making public comments to avoid spreading unverified information that could mislead the public or cause undue harm.
