The Chief of Defence Force, Major General Ibrahim Hilmy, has paid tribute to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) for its enduring sacrifices and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation.
In a video message released to mark the 133rd Anniversary of the MNDF, Major General Hilmy emphasised the crucial role the armed forces have played in responding to national emergencies and upholding the sovereignty of the Maldives. He highlighted the MNDF’s presence at the forefront of every disaster and national challenge, underscoring their essential contribution to the country’s resilience.
Reflecting on the military’s history, the Chief of Defence noted that the Army Anniversary has been formally observed since 1992, in recognition of 21st April 1892—the acknowledged date of the Army's inception. However, since 1942, 6th June has been commemorated as MNF Day. He also pointed out that the tradition of valour and sacrifice predates even 1892, citing the bravery of soldiers who gave their lives in defence of the nation’s independence in earlier conflicts.
He emphasised that the unwavering patriotism of Maldivian soldiers was evident in their continued dedication and sacrifice, noting that the MNDF remained ever-vigilant in fulfilling their duty to protect the nation. He encouraged the troops to stay committed to their responsibilities with resilience and honour.
Major General Hilmy also reflected on recent advancements, stating that the fruits of ongoing efforts to strengthen the MNDF are becoming visible. He remarked that under the leadership of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, several strategic initiatives have been undertaken to modernise and bolster the defence forces.
These comments follow Turkey’s recent announcement of its intention to donate a missile launcher to the Maldives, signalling growing international defence cooperation. Additional steps are being taken by the Maldivian government to secure further military resources to strengthen operational capabilities.
In line with his national security vision, President Dr Muizzu has also established the Army Air Force and equipped it with cutting-edge unmanned aerial systems (UAS), including advanced fighter drones sourced from Turkey.
