President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has accepted the resignation of Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau on April 26, 2025.
Demands for Shujau’s resignation arose following sustained public pressure regarding the handling of theinvestigation into the fall of a 21-year-old woman from H. Fentenoy onto the roof of an adjacent building in the early hours of April 18. The circumstances surrounding the incident, along with the subsequent police response, sparked widespread public concern and criticism.
Commissioner Shujau was appointed to the post on December 25, 2023, having previously served as an Assistant Commissioner within the Maldives Police Service.
With a public service career spanning over 15 years, Shujau commenced his tenure with the police in 2006, following his role as Assistant Principal at Majeediyya School. He was formally commissioned in 2008 and subsequently held a number of senior leadership positions, including Commander of the Malé Area, Head of the Police Academy, and Head of the Family and Child Protection Department (FCPD). He also spearheaded rehabilitation programmes aimed at deterring minors from gang affiliation.
Prior to his policing career, Shujau served the government for eight years in various capacities. Throughout his service with the Maldives Police, he amassed experience across training, operations, intelligence, investigations, and leadership.
At the age of 52, Shujau departs his position amid growing scrutiny, as calls intensify for enhanced transparency and accountability within the Maldives Police Service.
