The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has confirmed that redevelopment of Sultan Park in Malé will commence soon, following its official transfer to the Ministry earlier this year.
The popular park, which had been closed for an extended period and reportedly fallen into disrepair, was transferred from the Malé City Council to the Ministry on February 19, 2025. The transfer was initiated at the Council’s request, citing concerns that the neglected site had become a hotspot for criminal activities.
In a post on Facebook, Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib noted that initial clean-up efforts have already taken place over the past two months. He added that, in the absence of detailed previous surveys, a full survey of the site is currently underway. Once completed, the Ministry plans to finalise a redevelopment plan and commence construction in phases.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who visited Sultan Park and Rasfannu Beach in February, expressed concern over the deteriorating state of the facilities. He pledged to restore both areas, emphasising their importance as essential public spaces for Malé’s residents. The President reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to providing recreational spaces that offer families safe and enjoyable environments.
The redevelopment of Sultan Park forms part of a wider Government initiative to establish quality parks across all inhabited islands, aimed at improving the quality of life in urban and island communities.
Sultan Park, once a key leisure space in Malé, saw its main attractions including the iconic fountain and treehouse and was closed by the City Council in June 2024. The forthcoming redevelopment is expected to restore and enhance the park’s facilities, revitalising the area for public use.
