The Prosecutor General’s Office has ordered the Maldives Police Service to investigate whether any officers were negligent or breached procedures in connection with the case of the young woman who fell from a building in Malé City.

The incident occurred on the morning of April 18, 2025, when a 21-year-old woman fell from the ninth floor of a house in Henveiru onto the roof of an adjacent building. In a statement issued yesterday, the Prosecutor General’s Office said it had given special instructions to the Police Service on April 24 regarding the case.

Among the directives, the Prosecutor General’s Office noted concerns about personal information and photos or videos of the victim being publicly shared during a police press conference on April 24, potentially damaging her honour and dignity. The office instructed police to cease disclosing such information and to implement measures to prevent similar occurrences.

The Prosecutor General’s Office also highlighted that, according to police, some individuals brought in for questioning appeared intoxicated but refused to provide urine samples. It directed that refusal to provide bodily samples when legally required should be investigated as a separate offence.

The office further instructed that information disclosed in criminal cases must uphold individuals’ constitutional rights, maintain transparency, avoid impeding investigations, and prevent public confusion.

In addition, the Prosecutor General’s Office ordered an investigation into whether any police officers were negligent or violated procedures during the investigation into the fall.

The public has been invited to submit complaints regarding the investigation, with the Prosecutor General’s Office pledging to take necessary action on any complaints received.
