President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the recent discussions with Malaysia have opened new doors for strengthening bilateral relations across numerous sectors.

The President is currently undertaking an official visit to Malaysia, during which he held discussions with the Malaysian Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim. The two leaders issued a joint press statement following their talks.

In his remarks, President Dr Muizzu first expressed his gratitude to Malaysia for the warm welcome extended upon his arrival. He also acknowledged Malaysia’s longstanding assistance throughout the 57 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

President Dr Muizzu noted that Malaysia has played a significant role in the training of Maldivians, particularly under the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme, which has also supported the development of civil servants. To date, over 600 scholarships have been awarded to Maldivian students to pursue studies in Malaysia.

He further detailed that the two sides discussed strengthening cooperation in a wide range of areas. Agreements have already been signed in sectors such as health, tourism, sports, financial services, and the training of diplomats. President Dr Muizzu emphasised that the dialogue had paved the way for collaboration in additional fields.

The President expressed confidence that the Maldives would derive substantial benefits from the newly signed agreements. He also highlighted aspirations to bolster cooperation in defence, information technology, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.

Moreover, President Dr Muizzu stressed the importance of informing Malaysian investors about the investment opportunities available in the Maldives. He stated that information would be provided regarding prospects within the Special Economic Zone, the Maldives’ digital and maritime economy, and its financial services sector. The President thanked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for accepting the invitation to attend the Maldives Investment Forum.

In conclusion, President Dr Muizzu mentioned that discussions had also encompassed the Maldives' environmental and climate change goals. He extended an invitation to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to undertake an official visit to the Maldives.

President Dr Muizzu’s official visit to Malaysia is scheduled to conclude on the 30th of this month.
