Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib has announced that the Government will begin issuing land registrations in May for those allocated plots under the Binveriyaa scheme in Gulhifalhu. Minister Dr Muththalib made the statement while responding to questions during a recent parliamentary session.
Of the 9,031 plots designated under the scheme, 2,438 are located in Gulhifalhu. Minister Dr Muththalib noted that 465 beneficiaries had already received registrations when he assumed office, with an additional 159 registrations processed since then.
He explained that delays were caused by land being reserved for the Thilamalé Bridge project and related works. However, with project progress considered, the Government has decided to move forward with issuing registrations despite adjustments to initial plans.
So far, USD 200 million has been spent on land reclamation at Gulhifalhu, with an estimated USD 400 million more required for infrastructure development, including water and sanitation. Overall rehabilitation efforts are projected to cost at least USD 700 million.
