The National Mental Health Department (NMD) has launched a new book titled Viluntheri Ekuverin, focusing on the mental wellbeing of children and their parents.
The book was officially inaugurated by the Minister of Health, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim.
Prepared in collaboration with UNICEF Maldives, the publication is available in both Dhivehi and English. It is specifically designed to engage children while promoting awareness and understanding of mental health issues within families.
According to Dr Shanooha Mansoor, Consultant Psychiatrist at the National Centre for Mental Health, the book is intended to support children and parents experiencing various mental health challenges. She noted that the resource aims not only to address mental health conditions, but also to provide guidance on managing everyday emotional difficulties.

The book features four stories, each reflecting mental health themes relevant to children in the Maldivian context. Drawing inspiration from the sea, a natural and cultural symbol of the Maldives, he stories are tailored to resonate with young readers. Additionally, the book includes a comprehensive guide for parents, offering practical advice on recognising and responding to mental health concerns in children.
Dr Shanooha explained that the goal of the book is to provide support to children and families within the community. She emphasised that the publication is not limited to addressing mental illness, but also aims to tackle everyday challenges that may affect wellbeing. She expressed hope that the book would serve as a useful resource for both children and their parents.
The launch event was attended by Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, CEO of Dharumavantha Hospital, along with mental health professionals from the National Centre for Mental Health and senior officials from the Ministry of Health.
