A group of youths has been protesting nightly on Majeedhee Magu in the capital, but authorities dispersed Thursday's gathering citing concerns over public disruption and the imminent academic examinations.
According to police, the decision to intervene followed multiple complaints from residents and business owners, who reported that the activities were interfering with daily routines and commercial operations in the area.
Participants were reportedly playing music, table tennis, and carrom in the middle of the street, prompting concerns over the temporary closure of a key roadway and its impact on traffic flow and accessibility. Police officers had repeatedly advised the protesters to refrain from such activities.
Law enforcement officials noted that a significant number of students were scheduled to sit the GCE A/L examination the following day, and this factor played a role in the decision to disperse the gathering.
Authorities stated that the action was taken to balance the interests of students preparing for examinations and the need to minimise disruption to the wider community.
Concerns were also raised regarding the conduct of some individuals involved, including reports of inappropriate language.
In connection with the protest, police have arrested two individuals. Abdullah Mahzoom Majid, 28, was taken into custody on charges of obstructing police duties and attempting to assault a police officer. Aishath Shiman Ahmed, aged 19, was arrested on charges of disobedience to police orders and obstruction of duty.
