The Government has announced a renewed focus on strengthening the country’s defence infrastructure, citing the need to enhance national security and protect its vast maritime territory.

The announcement was made during a press conference held at the President’s Office, where President Dr Mohamed Muizzu outlined the Government’s defence priorities. He noted that the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has seen minimal expansion over the past two decades, prompting efforts to modernise and increase operational capacity.

Among the key initiatives is the expansion of the Coast Guard fleet, which plays a central role in monitoring and safeguarding the Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and Dogan-class missile-capable vessels have also been added to the fleet with support from international partners, including Turkey.

The Government emphasised that these measures are aimed at securing national interests and do not signal any intention of military escalation. Enhancements to fire and rescue services, as well as investment in military infrastructure and training, are expected to continue through 2025 and 2026.

Additionally, authorities highlighted the strategic importance of a robust defence posture in attracting foreign investment, with particular focus on securing economic zones from unauthorized activities. Agreements involving defence cooperation will be disclosed in accordance with confidentiality clauses and international protocols.

The policy shift includes a commitment to avoid stationing foreign military personnel in the Maldives, while welcoming technical cooperation in areas such as equipment procurement and human resource development.

The Administration reaffirmed that these efforts are in line with the national foreign policy stance of prioritizing Maldives’ sovereignty and security above all.
