The Maldives will officially mark August 30 each year as National Engineers’ Day, following a Government decision to recognise the role of engineers in national development.

The selected date coincides with the anniversary of the inauguration of the Sinamalé Bridge in 2018, one of the country’s largest infrastructure projects to date. The bridge, which links Malé, Hulhulé, and Hulhumalé, is regarded as a major engineering milestone involving significant local expertise.

According to the President’s Office, August 30 was considered the most suitable day to honour engineering contributions, given the scale and importance of the project to the nation’s growth.

The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has been tasked with overseeing the planning and execution of events related to the annual observance. Activities are expected to highlight the work of professionals in a wide range of engineering disciplines, including civil, mechanical, electrical, computer, and biomedical fields.
