Since April 2023, the Maldives has imposed a MVR 2 fee on disposable plastic bags to reduce plastic waste. According to MIRA’s 2024 Annual Report, revenue from this fee dropped by 27.4 per cent from MVR 12.66 million in 2023 to MVR 9.19 million in 2024, indicating reduced plastic bag usage. This decline supports the government’s environmental goals and reflects growing adherence to the Plastic Bag Charge under the Waste Management Act.
