President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended congratulations to the nation on the occasion of Maldives Library Day, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the Maldives National Library, the country’s oldest and largest public archive.
In a message shared to mark the occasion, President Dr Muizzu emphasised the enduring value of libraries, describing them as foundational institutions that illuminate communities and promote equitable access to knowledge. He expressed appreciation to all those who serve in the library sector and recognised their contribution to national development.
The Maldives National Library was officially founded on July 12, 1945, prior to the country's independence. The foundation stone was laid by Ameer Mohamed Amin Didi, then Head of the Department of Education. Initially known as the State Library, the institution was renamed the Maldives National Library in 1982 and has since grown into the principal repository of the nation's written heritage.
Today, the library houses an extensive collection of over 10,000 publications in Dhivehi, along with a wide range of books in English, Arabic, and Urdu. Its holdings span subjects including Maldivian history, religion, language, philosophy, science, and the arts. The library also maintains newspapers, periodicals, and resources on regional and international affairs, serving researchers, students, and the general public.
The origins of public access to library services in the Maldives date back to early initiatives by Sheikh Hussain Salahuddin, who made religious and legal texts available to the community from his private collection. This legacy has since evolved into a national institution committed to fostering an informed and literate society.
To mark the 80th anniversary, commemorations are being held nationwide, highlighting the vital role libraries continue to play in education, cultural preservation, and civic engagement.
