The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has confirmed the deployment of over 15 rangers across the Maldives to oversee and manage protected ecological areas, with further plans underway to expand the ranger workforce through formal training initiatives.
Rangers are currently stationed in key conservation zones including the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve, Addu Atoll Biosphere Reserve, Fuvahmulah Biosphere Reserve, Laamu Gaadhoo, Raa Vandhoo, South Ari Marine Protected Area and Shaviyani Farukolhu. However, despite over 90 officially designated protected areas across the country, the number of active rangers remains limited.
In response, the Government has launched a basic ranger training programme in partnership with the Maldives National University. The first cohort of 17 participants has successfully completed the course in July 2025, with additional batches planned to support ongoing recruitment.
The initiative forms a key part of the ENDhERI Project, aimed at enhancing the national capacity for conservation and environmental stewardship. Strengthening ranger coverage is expected to improve site monitoring and create new tourism-driven revenue streams
