The State Trading Organisation (STO) has begun importing and selling onions at reduced prices in response to a shortage caused by adverse weather conditions and rising market prices.
According to STO, the newly arrived shipment of onions has been made available for sale at the organisation’s main retail outlet, People's Choice, as well as its Wholesale Centre. Both locations are offering onions at a fixed price of MVR 15 per kilogram.
The intervention comes at a time when onion prices have seen a sharp increase in local markets, largely due to supply disruptions linked to poor weather.
STO has long played a role in helping traders manage price fluctuations, particularly during periods of market volatility or when commodity shortages arise. The organisation said it takes steps to address gaps in availability when market supply is insufficient.
In previous instances of commodity shortages, STO has also released other essential items into the market, including garlic, chillies and potatoes. These measures, taken during times of crisis, have been aimed at supporting both traders and the general public.
