Former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed support for the Government’s decision to revise the privileges currently granted to former presidents and members of the People’s Majlis.

In a post on X, Nasheed said he welcomed President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s initiative, adding that he personally wished to see a reduction in the pensions allocated to former presidents.

The announcement follows a statement made by President Dr Muizzu on 10 August, in which he confirmed that the Government would introduce amendments to the laws to revise certain privileges enjoyed by former leaders and parliamentarians.

President Dr Muizzu further noted that the Government is working to amend laws and regulations to bring pension benefits for state retirees in line with one another. He explained that the proposed amendments would ensure that pension allowances are suspended for any individual returning to state service after retirement.

The move addresses a longstanding public demand for reform, though no previous administration has acted on it due to its political sensitivity.
