Haa Alifu Atoll School in Hoarafushi has reintroduced higher secondary education, in line with the Government’s policy to expand A Level opportunities across the country.

The school, which has the second largest student population in the atoll, previously offered A Level classes but the programme was discontinued under the former administration due to low enrolment numbers.

Speaking to MMTV, MP for Hoarafushi Constituency Ali Moosa said parents and students in Hoarafushi had long called for A Level education to be reinstated at the school.

“It is a very important decision by the President to provide more students with the opportunity to study at A Level. Under this decision, A Level classes will resume at Haa Alifu Atoll School this year, with eight students enrolled in the first batch. This is a golden opportunity for students to continue their studies on their home island, close to their parents." he said.

Ali Moosa added that if the school had not resumed A Level teaching, many students would have been left without the chance to continue their education in the island. He thanked the school’s management, the Ministry of Education, and the President for facilitating the programme.

Expanding access to A Level studies has been identified as a key priority for the current Administration. The number of students pursuing A Levels has increased significantly as a result of policy changes, including lowering grade thresholds for entry. According to the Education Ministry, 76 per cent of students in Greater Malé area now have access to higher secondary opportunities.
