Over MVR 1 billion spent on student loans since 2024: MoHE

The Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development (MoHE) has reported that MVR 1.07 billion has been spent on the Government’s Student Loan Scheme since 2024.
According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry, total spending on student loans was MVR 365 million in 2025. Since 2024, 1,226 students have enrolled under the scheme and 964 students have graduated. In 2025 alone, 396 students enrolled and 382 graduated.
The Ministry also released data on scholarship programmes. Spending on scholarships amounted to MVR 368 million from 2024, including MVR 119 million in 2025. A total of 272 new students have enrolled since 2024, while 370 have graduated. In 2025, 52 students enrolled and 84 graduated.
Meanwhile, the First Degree Scheme has seen an expenditure of MVR 267 million since 2024, with an additional MVR 117 million in 2025. Since 2024, 4,467 students registered under the scheme, and 5,579 students have graduated. In 2025, 1,687 new students registered and 2,237 graduated.
The Government has sought to ensure access and greater inclusivity in higher education through several measures, including waiving the administrative fee on student loans and making the scheme Shariah-compliant.
