The Maldives has secured unanimous endorsement to join the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), following approval by the Agency’s General Conference at its 69th Regular Session in Vienna, Austria on 15 September 2025.
The country first applied for membership in November 2024. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, joining the Agency will allow the Maldives to expand access to nuclear and radiation medicine, particularly in cancer care, while also strengthening cooperation in areas such as food security, climate resilience, and technical capacity-building.
In her remarks to the Conference, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Offices Dr Salma Rasheed highlighted the significance of science-based solutions and the role of international partnerships in addressing the challenges faced by Small Island Developing States. She described IAEA’s endorsement of Maldives as a milestone in recognising how small states contribute to peace, security, and sustainable development.
IAEA membership is expected to support Maldives in advancing the country’s national development priorities while contributing to global initiatives on the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology.
Established in 1957, the IAEA serves as the world’s hub for cooperation in the safe, secure, and responsible use of nuclear technology. With the Maldives’ admission, the Agency’s membership expands further beyond 175 countries.
