President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Mohamed Shafeeg Mahmood as Vice President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). The appointment fills the vacancy created following the expiry of the term of former Vice President Moomina Waheed.
According to the President’s Office, the decision was made in line with Section 8 of the Human Rights Commission Act (Law No. 6/2006).
Shafeeg’s nomination was reviewed by the Human Rights and Gender Committee of the People’s Majlis, which subsequently approved his appointment. He secured the support of 67 parliamentarians during the parliamentary vote.
The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives is mandated to promote and protect fundamental rights and freedoms, and the Vice President plays a key role in guiding the institution’s work alongside other commission members.
