The Civil Service Commission (CSC) has appointed a five-member temporary committee to manage the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC) until permanent members are formally selected.

The interim arrangement follows the ratification of the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act, which dissolved the former Maldives Broadcasting Commission and the Maldives Media Council, consolidating them into a single regulatory body.

According to the Civil Service Commission (CSC), the temporary committee consists of Dr Ali Zaki, Director General at the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recreation; Ahmed Mausoom, Director General at the Ministry of Cities, Infrastructure and Public Works; Aminath Naseer, Director General at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs; Aminath Shahidha, Director General at the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade; and Imad Mohamed, Chief Corporate Executive of the National Archives.

In line with the Act, interim members must be at Director General level or higher within the civil service. The five appointees will internally elect a temporary President and Vice President of the Commission by ballot, as required under the new guidelines.

The CSC noted that the temporary committee will continue to manage the MMBC until the appointment of permanent members by the People’s Majlis.

Officials stated that the legislation aims to enhance press freedom while establishing clearer mechanisms to curb misinformation and reinforce media accountability. Under the new framework, the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC) will oversee both print and broadcast outlets, bringing media regulation in line with contemporary standards and constitutional guarantees.
