President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Maldives joining the United Nations, describing the milestone as both a historic decision and a symbol of the country’s enduring partnership with the organisation.
In a message issued on Sunday, the President reflected on the Maldives’ entry into the UN in 1965, noting that the move represented hope, ambition, and confidence in the value of international cooperation. He credited the UN with playing a vital role in the country’s development, including progress in healthcare, education, governance, and the protection of human rights.
President Dr Muizzu further highlighted the significance of the Maldives’ engagement at the UN as a small island state, stating that the country has consistently worked to amplify the concerns of vulnerable nations. He underscored the Maldives’ leadership on climate action, where it has urged the global community to act decisively to safeguard the planet for future generations.
Addressing the broader role of the UN, the President called for reforms to ensure the organisation can effectively respond to new and complex global challenges. He said strengthening trust in UN decision-making depends on its ability to take meaningful action during crises, pointing to the ongoing situation in Gaza as an example where the international community must do more.
The President ended his message by reiterating that the Maldives remains dedicated to international cooperation and will continue working towards a fairer, more inclusive, and sustainable global community.
