President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that construction of a new leeward harbour in Meemu Maduvvari will begin early next year.

The announcement was made during the President's visit to the island as part of his ongoing tour of inhabited islands across four atolls. He said the harbour project will be prioritised among the island’s development needs and included in the 2026 State budget.

“The biggest development project for this island will be a new leeward harbour. This is the most important infrastructure work residents want. It will be included in next year’s budget, and practical work will start in January,” President said.

In addition to the harbour, the President pledged to enhance community facilities. He said the football stadium will be upgraded to modern standards with turf laid, while extension work on the health centre will be expedited.

During the visit, President Dr Muizzu met with members of the Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and residents, who raised their concerns and discussed future development priorities.
