President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that, should Raiymandhoo residents opt for relocation, housing construction on the host island could begin as early as this year or next year.

He made the remarks during a consultative meeting with community leaders and residents of Meemu Raiymandhoo, where he discussed the island’s development prospects and addressed concerns about daily livelihoods.

Residents expressed differing views during the meeting, with some supporting relocation and others preferring to remain on the island. In response, President Dr Muizzu said population and development consolidation is a cost-effective policy that can strengthen communities, but stressed that such initiatives would only proceed after careful consideration and with the full consent of residents.

He clarified that, under the Government’s consolidation policy, relocation would only be considered if at least 80 per cent of an island’s population agrees. He further assured that, if Raiymandhoo chooses relocation, a housing project would be implemented on the host island to accommodate them.

“Every registered house in the island will be given three adequate bedrooms. The keys will be handed over. The MVR 50,000 given to families will be revised and increased,” President said.

He added that the Government’s intention is to provide people the opportunity to move to areas with better health, education, basic services and infrastructure. A vote will be taken through the Island Council, residents, and relevant ministries and agencies to determine the community’s decision.

The President noted that due consideration would be given to the views of both those who favour relocation and those who prefer to remain in Raiymandhoo.
