President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that the Government will accelerate the completion of the land reclamation project and the Muli–Naalaafushi causeway, calling them vital to addressing the island’s most pressing needs.

Meeting with residents of Meemu Naalaafushi during his ongoing tour of inhabited islands across four atolls, the President highlighted the shortage of land as a key challenge, noting that it has limited housing opportunities and hindered economic growth. He said the island, currently measuring 12 hectares, would be expanded to 15 hectares through reclamation and supported with beach protection works commencing this year.

The President assured that the Muli–Naalaafushi causeway would also be completed at the earliest possible time to improve connectivity between the two islands. In addition, the harbour expansion project, signed during his visit, will be carried out to improve access for boats and fishing vessels.

President Dr Muizzu confirmed that the Government will prioritise the completion of water and sewerage systems as requested by the community, bringing relief to long-standing challenges. He announced that work on a new health centre building would begin within two months, featuring a four-bed emergency room, laboratory facilities and other essential services.

Plans were also unveiled to enhance community infrastructure. These include the expansion of the island’s school before the next academic year, construction of a new police building, and the establishment of a fitness and recreation centre. Sports development is also on the agenda, with the football field and a handball pitch being designed. Waste management facilities will be introduced later this year to strengthen environmental services on the island.
