President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Bank of Maldives (BML) will establish US dollar ATMs in 40 islands across the country, expanding access to foreign currency services.

The President made the announcement while addressing residents of Meemu Muli during his ongoing tour of inhabited islands in four atolls. He explained that the initiative would cover seven urban centres, islands without existing dollar ATMs, as well as communities that have developed local tourism industry.

The measure is intended to address long-standing concerns faced by residents and businesses in obtaining foreign currency. The President stated that the project will be carried out by the Bank of Maldives and completed within the first quarter of 2026.
