Airport and Hospital projects commenced in Thaa Vilufushi

The Government has launched two major infrastructure projects in Thaa Vilufushi, with construction work beginning on a new airport and the 30-bed hospital during President Dr Muizzu's visit to the island as part of his ongoing tour .
The airport development project has been handed to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), with land reclamation work already underway. The project was inaugurated at a ceremony officiated by Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer, who signed the agreement with MACL Chief Executive Officer and MD Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed. Plans include a 1,800-metre runway, a terminal building, a fire station and other key facilities, with completion expected within 30 months.
Speaking to residents during the community meeting, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed that the airport was one of his key pledges to Vilufushi and that it would be delivered within his current term. Once completed, the airport is expected to be operated by MACL and provide significant economic opportunities for the region.
In a separate ceremony, Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim officiated the groundbreaking of a new 30-bed hospital in Vilufushi. The project, contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), is expected to be completed within 18 months. MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee, council members and local residents were present at the event.
According to the Government, the airport and hospital projects together is expected to strengthen connectivity, healthcare and economic growth in the atolls, ensuring improved services for the people of Vilufushi and neighbouring islands.
