President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that 200 loans will be issued to equip fishing vessels with Refrigerated Sea Water (RSW) systems before this year’s Fishermen’s Day, as part of the Government’s efforts to strengthen the fisheries sector.
Speaking to residents of Thaa Hirilandhoo during his ongoing tour of four atolls, the President said the programme would ensure better preservation of catch and higher profits for fishermen. He noted that most of the vessels chosen under the loan scheme are based in Hirilandhoo, with four of the island’s boats set to receive it in the current round. In total, 200 loans will be issued to support installation of the RSW systems.
The President also confirmed that a cold storage facility will be established in Hirilandhoo, with work scheduled to begin in January 2026. He said the measure, along with plans to reclaim more land for industrial use, would provide a stronger foundation for fisheries-related businesses and create more opportunities for the island’s large working population.
Alongside fisheries development, the President inaugurated several infrastructure projects in Hirilandhoo. These included the signing of a harbour expansion project, the launch of road development works, and the start of construction on a new mosque and Island Council Office. The President also announced the commencement of a fitness and recreation centre project, and confirmed that a futsal stadium and additional sports facilities will be included in next year’s budget.
In education and health, President Dr Muizzu pledged that Hirilandhoo School would be upgraded in time for the new academic year, with additional resources provided to meet student needs. He further assured that improvements to the island’s health centre would be prioritised.
