Consultation meetings have taken place in 50 islands across nine atolls for the Maldives’ 20-year National Development Plan, Viluntheri Raajje 2045.
The consultation process, which began on 17 September, is expected to conclude by October. Meetings have already been completed in Addu City with six islands, Fuvahmulah City, Haa Alifu Atoll with 15 islands, Vaavu Atoll with five islands and Alifu Dhaalu Atoll with seven islands, making a total of 34 islands. Sessions are currently ongoing in Gaafu Dhaalu, Meemu, Laamu and Lhaviyani atolls.
According to the Government, the plan aims to set out a long-term vision for how the Maldives will be developed over the next two decades. It will consider demographic and lifestyle shifts, as well as environmental, structural and technological changes expected to shape the country’s future.
Island and atoll councils, government institutions, non-governmental organisations, businesses and private individuals are invited to take part in the discussions. The Administration has announced that the full plan is scheduled for launch in January 2026.
