The Parliament has opened applications for three positions on the newly established Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission, inviting interested candidates to apply before 12:00 p.m. on 12 October 2025.

The seven-member body, formed under the Maldives Media Regulation Act, will serve as the country’s principal authority on media oversight. Four members will be directly elected by registered media outlets through a process overseen by the Elections Commission (EC), while the remaining three will be appointed by Parliament.

Applicants for the parliamentary appointments must be Maldivian citizens over 30 years of age and either hold a degree in journalism or broadcasting or possess a minimum of five years of experience in the media sector. Members are appointed for a five-year term, with no individual allowed to serve more than two consecutive terms.

Those in charge of media organisations, editors, political party members, or shareholders of media or communications businesses are not eligible to contest.

Meanwhile, the Elections Commission has also opened candidacy for the four elected seats and published the provisional list of media outlets eligible to vote. Once finalised, voting will be conducted separately for broadcasters and other media organisations, in line with the sector-based representation required by law.
