The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to strengthen collaboration on environmental initiatives. The agreement was formalised as part of activities celebrating World Tourism Day and National Tourism Day.
Under the MoU, HDC will implement the MANSA programme, an awareness campaign aimed at protecting beaches and marine ecosystems while showcasing the Maldives’ natural beauty. The initiative will begin with a beach cleaning event scheduled for 3 October in Hulhumalé, coinciding with National Tourism Day.
The waste collected during the programme will be processed with the assistance of the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) to ensure safe disposal. In addition, an awareness session will also be held on the same day to engage the community in sustainable practices.
Officials said the collaboration reflects the country’s commitment to promoting tourism growth alongside environmental stewardship. This year’s World Tourism Day, celebrated globally on 27 September, is themed “Tourism and Sustainable Change.”
