The Maldives joined the global community today in celebrating the International Day of Older Persons, observed annually on 1 October since its adoption by the United Nations General Assembly in 1990.

This year’s theme, “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being and Our Rights”, highlights the contributions of older persons to nation-building while urging greater efforts to safeguard their health, rights, and social inclusion. It emphasises the need to expand opportunities for their active participation both locally and internationally.

With the Maldivian population undergoing rapid demographic changes, the Government noted the importance of age-responsive policies to ensure equality and resilience in an ageing society. These include guaranteeing equal access to healthcare, social protection, and economic opportunities, as well as promoting dignity and independence in later life. The National Policy for Older Persons has been formulated to create a safe and caring environment, recognising their invaluable services while enabling them to remain productive and respected members of society.

Complementing this framework, the Government has introduced a scheme to foster family care and support for the elderly. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stressed that older citizens must be fully included in community life to maintain their physical, mental and social well-being. In line with this vision, Israhvehinge Naadhee has already been established, with councils across the atolls working to create similar spaces.

Officials underlined that such initiatives are vital to ensure the elderly remain valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their experience to the nation’s development.
