Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua has announced that China will provide relief on loans owed by the Maldives.
Speaking at a ceremony held in Malé to celebrate China’s National Day, attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the Ambassador said discussions between Maldivian and Chinese officials on debt facilitation have concluded, with an agreement to provide greater ease for repayments.
The Ambassador also reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting the Maldives’ development, noting that three major projects will soon move forward with Chinese assistance: the construction of the China-Maldives Friendship Hospital in Villimalé, the modernisation of roads in Malé and Villimalé, and the development of 50 council secretariats across the country.
Highlighting closer ties between the two nations, Ambassador Kong recalled the 11 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed during President Dr Muizzu’s recent official visit to China, as well as the introduction of Chinese Yuan accounts at the Bank of Maldives, describing them as proof of deepening friendship.
He further noted the Maldivian Government’s ongoing efforts to stabilise the economy and reduce debt burdens, pledging that China will continue to extend assistance at the Maldives’ request while respecting its independence and sovereignty.
