Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has strongly condemned the escalation of violence during tonight’s opposition protest in Malé, organised by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
In a statement shared on X, the Minister stressed that forcibly seizing equipment from an on-duty police officer cannot be regarded as a peaceful political act, as it constitutes coercion and violence that obstruct law enforcement duties.
The protest, which had initially been authorised to proceed along Ameenee Magu, turned confrontational when demonstrators attempted to divert towards Majeedhee Magu near Artificial Beach. Clashes ensued as protesters tried to push through barricades and confronted police officers on duty.
Minister Ihusaan’s remarks underline the Government’s stance that assaults on law enforcement officers mark a clear shift from legitimate protest to violence, and that such disruptions will not be tolerated. Issued while the situation was still unfolding, his statement positions him as a firm voice for stability and law enforcement within President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.
