MDP activists incite violence at protest promoted as peaceful --

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had called on supporters to gather in Malé on Friday night for what was billed as a peaceful protest. However, the demonstration turned violent after MDP activists themselves incited clashes with police.

The protest, which had been authorised along Ameenee Magu, escalated when MDP leaders encouraged participants to push through barricades near Artificial Beach in an attempt to enter Majeedhee Magu. Their calls prompted supporters to confront police officers, leading to disorder and violent conduct.

Some protesters seized police riot control equipment during the clashes and attempted to use it against officers. Authorities described these actions as criminal offences and clear evidence that the protest had shifted from peaceful assembly to violence.

Rather than calming tensions, MDP leaders appeared to egg on demonstrators, contributing to the breakdown of order.

The Maldives Police Service, in a statement, reaffirmed that while freedom of assembly is guaranteed under the Constitution, inciting violence and attacking law enforcement will not be tolerated.
