President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to a fair and equitable process in allocating housing in Alifu Dhaalu Dhigurah.
Speaking to residents during his ongoing tour of the atoll, the President said housing remains the most pressing issue for the island. He noted that the existing land use plan had shortcomings and said that, while improvements have been made through amendments, additional revisions remain necessary.
President Dr Muizzu emphasised that Island Councils must allocate housing fairly and protect the interests of all residents. He said relevant institutions should be consulted when amending the land use plan in accordance with the law and assured that the Government would assist in expediting the process. He added that at least 50 housing plots would be supported through amendments to the plan, with the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure helping the council ensure fair and balanced land distribution.
The President also highlighted two agreements signed during the ceremony held on the island, one for road development and another for the construction of a new school building. He described these projects as important for both local tourism and community development.
Addressing housing pressures linked to Dhigurah’s tourism growth, President Dr Muizzu highlighted that the island’s status as a prominent local tourism destination has driven up land and rent prices. To address accommodation shortages for staff working in schools and other institutions, both local and foreign, he proposed developing an accommodation block on the island. He added that funding for this project will be included in the 2026 State Budget.
The President also highlighted a number of other initiatives planned for Dhigurah, including the development of a football ground, a convention centre to support Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism, installation of a dollar ATM, provision of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) for sports fishing, the inclusion of a beach area in the ongoing shore protection project, as well as repairs to the Fitness and Recreation Centre, construction of an outdoor gym, and establishment of a children’s park.
He further noted that the newly inaugurated administrative office of the health centre was only the first step, with plans underway to expand the facility and make it a 24-hour health centre.
