Dhidhdhoo harbour channel marker relocation scheduled for next month

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the long-awaited relocation of Alifu Dhaalu Dhidhdhoo harbour channel marker in will begin next month, addressing decades of concerns over accessibility during the monsoon season.

Speaking at a meeting with members of the Dhidhdhoo Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee, and local residents, President Dr Muizzu said the the project will address a longstanding issue that has hindered harbour access for over four decades. He described the delay in resolving the issue as a sign of past neglect and pledged to prioritise its completion within a year.

The President also assured residents that the island’s development would be carried out without discrimination. Council representatives raised additional concerns, including changing the satellite schooling to physical classes and the resumption of water and sewerage project. 

At the event, Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib confirmed that the Government is working with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to complete the environmental impact assessment required for the harbour project. He noted that once approval is secured, construction will begin this year. The Minister added that efforts are also underway to expedite the stalled water and sewerage works.
