First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko, discussed strengthening cooperation in education during a courtesy call on October 7 2025.

The meeting, at Mulee’aage, came as the Maldives and Japan celebrate 58 years of diplomatic relations. Both sides reflected on the long-standing friendship between the two nations and highlighted areas where collaboration could be deepened, particularly through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) programmes that support capacity-building and human resource development.

Discussions also acknowledged the contributions of Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV), who are stationed across Maldivian islands to assist with specialised and physical education. The First Lady expressed appreciation for Japan’s consistent support in broadening educational opportunities, while also recognising its wider role in infrastructure, telecommunications, and development initiatives.

Ambassador Rumiko reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting the Maldives’ development goals and commended the First Lady’s efforts in promoting education and social welfare.
